Collection: Kitagawa Utamaro
Utamaro began his artist apprenticeship from a young age under Toriyama Sekien (鳥山石燕), an eshi (ukiyo-e designer) of the Kano school.
Toriyama Sekien is a painter recognized for his many works of yokai-ga (paintings of supernatural creatures).
In 1775, at the age of 22, Utamaro made his debut as an artist under the name, Kitagawa Toyoaki (北川豊章).
As an upcoming ukiyo-e artist, Toyoaki created book illustrations and yakusha-e (portraits of actors).
